Meet Geoff Chilton
We’d like to introduce you to one of our latest Studio Holders to join us over at Globe 2, Holme Mills, Geoff Chilton. We are over the moon to announce that Geoff will also be one of our new freelance tutors for Drawing & Painting workshops, with his first one taking place during the Easter holidays! More information can be found by clicking on the link below.
Geoff is an award-winning professional artist and potter based at Globe Arts. His influences are diverse but include Rembrandt van Rijn, JMW Turner and Graham Sutherland, as well as contemporary artists such as Fred Cuming, John McCombs, Martin Procter and John Blockley. He was a teacher for twenty years before devoting himself entirely to art.
Geoff has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Royal Cambrian Academy, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, The Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (of which he was a council member), The Jetty Gallery in Oban, The Colin Jellicoe Gallery in Manchester, and The Woodstone Gallery in Lincolnshire. He was also one of the Resident Artists at The Green Man Gallery in Buxton!
Geoff was one of the original members of the Manchester Urban Sketchers group in 2013 and the founder of the Buxton Sketching group. His work is in private collections across the UK and as far away as Norway and Japan.
For many years Geoff worked solely in oil paint, but since 2015 has began to incorporate other media, including ink, pastel, oil pastel and acrylic paint into his work. He sees his painting as a search for truth in the landscape – an investigation of the soul and the emotions; a quest to find the essential character of a place. He eschews the practice of representational copying of a view for its own sake and prefers to use more experimental techniques. He has no qualms about manipulating elements of a scene by exaggeration colour and marks in order to capture what he feels about what he feels to be the real essence of a location. He is naturally drawn to the wilder parts of Britain: the Pennines, the coastlines of Pembrokeshire and Cornwall, and the Scottish Highlands among others.
