What is Art at the House ?

It is a free event comprising two days of creative, interactive experiences combined with good food and drink, children’s activities and entertainment.

What time can you come to see us ?

We’ll be on our stall from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday

PLUS, our neighbour for this event will be Mindful maker aka Carolyn, who teaches our Craftanoon lessons!

When can we do a workshop ?

FUSED GLASS MINI PLANT STAKES

We are running 1hr slots on both days, choose a time slot that suits you - we’re only taking 6 people max at a time.

Using frit and stringer, you will decorate a pre-cut piece of clear glass, which we will take back to our studio after the event, and fuse in our big kiln!

Pay on the day (£5) cash or card, it is suitable for anyone aged 5-105!

Please note, we will provide safety goggles which must be worn throughout the session.

When do we get our fused glass pieces back ?

1-2 weeks after the event, we will email you with your collection times slots, so you can visit our studio and see what we do here too!

The pieces will have been fired, cleaned, then wrapped in tissue - keeping them safe for the journey home.

We’d love to see where you put your pieces when you get them home, please send/ tag us in any photos you take :)

We are back over at Zapato tap with 'Rhythm & Reflections' from local artist, Kevin Threlfall.

Kevin's abstract landscapes take you on a unique journey where rhythm, movement, and emotion come alive on the canvas. Through expressive strokes, vibrant colours, and dynamic compositions, these artworks capture the improvisation, energy, and soul of jazz!

Join Kevin and ourselves for the preview on Friday 20th September, 7pm onwards. If you can't get down to the preview, then Rhythm & Reflections will be up at the tap until 16th October, coinciding with Marsden Jazz Festival.

Step in to Frances Noon’s world, as we host her new exhibition here at Globe Arts Studio Gallery, this August.

“The world as I see it”, features intricate art inspired by Frances’ everyday life. “A lot of the pieces feature houses/sheds/barns..... animals and birds....... It's my look at life around me, what stands out to me and what I like.”

Join us and Frances for our Meet the Artist afternoon on Saturday 3rd August, 4pm onwards. The world as I see it will be running until 26th August, as part of our Summer Exhibition!

This July, we welcome back the Yorkshire Colourists, though this time their work will be over at Zapato Tap!

Yorkshire Colourists are a collective of five artists living and working in and around the moorland regions of West Yorkshire.

They take their inspiration from landscapes near and far but always seeking out the colour and textures to be found in the rich tapestry of fields,  rocky crags, changing light, cloudscapes, mountains, moorlands, rivers and stone walls wherever they may be.  All these elements evoke a variety of vibrant responses from the five artists and it is this combination of a common love but five distinctly different approaches that makes this group so exciting with a growing reputation.

Join us for the preview night on Friday 19th July, 7pm onwards.

OLIVER LANCASTER’S ART SHOW

A whole new selection of paintings and objects; on show and available to purchase.

Oliver loves to explore techniques and materials; to produce work which goes beyond the mundane and everyday. His work is bold and playful, yet often serious and multi layered. He finds working in this way keeps his work fresh and exciting.

Expect an eclectic mix of painting, sculpture, drawing and digital art on non conventional surfaces, influenced by underground counter culture and naive art.

Through disparate themes, common threads emerge between the works. Distant memories, remnants, surfaces that are worn, decay and fragments left behind.

Join us for the preview on Saturday 6th July, 2 - 5 pm.

Obsession runs from Monday 8th July - Saturday 13th July, 11 am - 3 pm, as part of Holmfirth Artweek 2024. Then 10 am - 2 pm during our regular opening times until 27th July.

Jackie Harrowsmith - Founder and Director of Globe Arts Studio

As many know we are growing our provision and have taken on an additional premises at Holme Mills Marsden. The building is industrial and has a rich heritage both architecturally and through the many businesses that have operated there.

I am obsessed with the building’s past experiences and life. Some of this presents itself physically in the walls, floors, pillars, pipes, wiring and light that are the lifeblood of the space. Some of this presents itself emotionally through its atmosphere – it’s a calm, industrious truthful space. I feel creative here.

These casts are taken directly from quiet parts of the building that are easily lost in its vastness. They capture moments that I noticed them and felt connected to them. I have an overwhelming feeling that I want to preserve them, knowing that the next stages of growth for the building will not include them.

Helen Balbontin - Art Teacher

I have always found spending time outside in the natural environment gives me a sense of calm and serenity, I often collect little keepsakes acorns, pebbles, leaves, shells…….

I often keep a favourite smooth pebble in my pocket to touch or squeeze in my hand at times of stress.

I especially enjoy walking alongside rivers and seashores, while I walk I collect things that have been eroded by the water.

In my work I have explored some of my favourite found objects using a range of materials to understand and explore the details and textures of these objects. Each of these objects has significance for me, connected to happy memories of spending time with people I love, in places I love. These objects were collected in Filey, Boggle Hole, Gamrie Bay and Boccadasse.

My work is Mixed Media paintings and Tetra Pak printing.

Beverley Kendall - Artist

I have an obsession with an old gasometer, a relic of our industrial past, and a beautiful, geometric structure. It is a giant sculpture standing out against the sky, in Huddersfield.
This amazing, historical building is to be dismantled and will be lost for ever. 
I made this structure the focus for my project in order to preserve it in some way.

Part way through this work I became distracted (obsessed) by Siddi quilts, made by Indian women of African descent. Their vibrant colours and plan-as-you-go method fascinated me and I wanted to try it out-it’s much harder than it looks, but I enjoyed the challenge! I used silk fabrics for strong colours, and shapes from the gasometer to complete 2 hangings.

The third hanging is geometric with hard-edge shapes and layout influenced by my love of mid-century design and architecture. 

The design ideas on paper are made using painted brown paper and will, hopefully, lead to further fabric hangings using recycled natural fabrics.

‘I have many influences which feed into and inform my work. I’m inspired by the journey to my studio through the scenic steep valleys which gives me a birds eye perspective of the landscape and a sense of its history and the homes embedded within it. My background is in narrative illustration and I’m fascinated how illustrators visualise emotions especially in children’s picture books, this has led me to working with children who struggle to articulate their feelings. By using creative techniques I help children process their world and create a visual narrative while finding comfort in the process. I observe the children channeling complex feelings of home life through choice of colour, medium, pressure applied to the paper and thoughtful pauses throughout. I’m inspired by the children’s intuitively confident creative freedom and instinctive nonjudgemental trust in the outcome. I work to foster this approach towards my own work by being process focussed and maintaining a curious and open mindset.

I start building my prints with a collection of hand painted papers and vintage ephemera, including letters, postcards, maps and photographs representing lost moments, memories of place and pockets of time. I look for a connection to build a narrative and create quick thumbnail sketches. I transfer the spontaneous energy of the naive lines from these sketches onto TetraPak cartons which I use as print plates to support sustainability within my printmaking. I incise into the TetraPak’s surface with etching needles, a scalpel, leather work tools, screw drivers and a pattern cutting wheel, then create texture with scrim, an open gauzed cloth used to remove ink from the plate. This is done during the inking process, complimenting the mark making and adding movement and authenticity to the final print. I combine a number of printmaking techniques including blind emboss, de-bossing, monoprint, drypoint, wax pastel transfer and Chine collé allowing for flexibility when laying out the final print on the press bed.

Cross pollinating these processes and jigsawing techniques together also allows for affordable experimentation and an organic playful approach which compliments the visual narrative and gives new perspective into these forgotten memories in the landscape of everyday lives.’

Displayed alongside Lisa’s striking printwork is the remarkable sculpted houses by Yukihiro Akama, adding a delightful touch to the ‘Ova Roof Tops’ exhibition. After initially training as an architect at Tohoku University of Art and Design, in Yamagata, Japan, Yukihiro Akama creates beautifully intricate miniature wooden houses, each one carved from a single piece of wood inspired by buildings spotted upon his travels.

'Ova roof tops will be running from 4th May to 22nd June at our Globe Arts Studio Gallery on Carr Lane.

Little Houses

Working from a furniture maker’s workshop in Huddersfield, Akama is surrounded by the natural world. There, he creates these singular houses, carving each one from a single piece of wood. He draws on his experience as a joiner, through which he has refined his skills and techniques in woodworking. Each piece is given a unique appearance and takes between 3 hours and 3 days to complete. Akama has developed a method of colouring the wood using iron acetate solution. The solution is painted onto the wood which reacts with the tannins to create a beautiful ebonised finish.

The wood often dictates the starting point for the designs, with the knots or grain guiding where Akama cuts and carves. Gradually they take on the appearance of a house – often low and long, or tall with stilt-like legs and large roofs, sometimes cantilevered out. Delicate and intricate detailing of clay render and pebbles minimally decorate and enhance the surfaces, adding to the overall effect of how precarious man-made structures can be and the now transient and perilous nature of so many people’s lives. Inspiration comes from many sources for these fantastic creations, but much comes from Japanese temples and shrines and particularly from Jomon-era ruins; the shapes, textures and surfaces used in this period of 4,000 years ago.

Akama is an architectural technician by training, having studied architecture at Tohoku University of Art and Design, in Yamagata, Japan. When living in Japan, Akama designed a house for a plot of land he owned, rich in native Japanese trees with wild fruits and mushrooms. He aims to capture a sense of place in his work, creating houses that belong in woodland forest settings – quiet and rural. In 2011, he and his family moved to the UK, drawn to Yorkshire due to its landscape and natural surroundings. Here he has pursued an alternative lifestyle and career, responding to an overwhelming need to work with his hands as a maker. His first solo UK exhibition took place in 2013, and this is his second solo exhibition at YSP.

Globe Arts Studio is very excited to present a series of Little Houses and drawings by Yukihiro Akama created especially for Globe Gallery.

We are delighted to present Balancing Form by Emma Oughtibridge, which will be showing at Zapato Taproom from Friday 12th April. Please join us for the exhibition preview from 7pm onwards.

‘After completing a Fine Art degree, I graduated from Brighton University with a PGCE in 2000.  I moved from London to Holmfirth to set up a professional studio, becoming a part-time tutor of adults and young people. This creative freedom allowed me to focus on developing my own creative style. I now teach A level Art at Rochdale Sixth Form College, alongside working as a contemporary abstract painter.’

‘A grey slice of stillness, scratched into the surface, converses with an adjacent cadmium block. A wedge of black stands against an irregular rectangle of lemon yellow. Red speaks loudly, layer upon layer, muted by grey greens.  Imperfect coral tones drag leaving staccato marks on canvas.  A thin line boldly intersects a dominant form leaving a tenuously balanced single transparent semi-circle. These constructions depict the interplay of rhythm with composition.’

This Winter we proudly present ‘Trifle Range’ by Christian ‘Niblo’ Lloyd, which will be at Zapato Taproom from Friday 23rd February onwards.

Originally from Swansea but now based in Slaithwaite, Christian trained as an illustrator, worked as a graphic designer and has been involved in all manner of art, design and community projects, including Bristow & Lloyd ‘a pair of so-called artists’.

'Trifle range is a selection of recent abstract paintings that celebrate painting in all its messy, provisional, visually edible, disruptive, unfussy, and playful ways. I enjoy painting and wish to transmit some of that optimism through the work.'

Zapato is just off the historical Huddersfield Narrow Canal between Slaithwaite and Marsden which you can reach in about 30 minute walk (ish) from our Globe Arts Studio.

Join us for the preview on Friday 10th November at 6pm, and enjoy everything the Taproom has to offer. With 7 keg lines and 2 cask of Zapato & guest beer, natural wine, plus specialty coffee and soft drinks, there is a drink for every thirsty mouth. Birria Bandits will be in the beer garden serving up great street food, 4.30 - 8.30pm, or until it’s all gone!
