A full day workshop at Kirkheaton Primary
On Monday, Zoe and Leah spent the day at Kirkheaton Primary School, working with the Year 2 classes to create a fabulous collaborative picture from felt and wool!
As the children were about to start reading “The Magical Kite Ride” by Sophie Edgar , they made an amazing mural inspired by the illustrations to get in the spirit to work with the illustrator Roger Davies the following day!
Zoe created a plan inspired by features of “The Magical Kite Ride”, including big, bubbly trees and Castle Hill (which all the children recognised straight away!)
In the first session, the children worked in pairs to create the aspect of the picture that they were responsible for - some had hills, some had trees, and one pair had the tricky task of creating Castle Hill! They took time considering which different colours of wool to choose, to create bright and detailed trees, clouds and hills.
They then took their time carefully to layer their wool, ready to roll to see the finished result! The children couldn’t believe that what they had created had come from little bits of wool! After lunch, the second group were given the task of creating the last lot of trees and clouds to make the piece complete.
Year 2 were very observant checking for gaps or holes in their felt, finding area to fix to get the perfect end result.
In small groups, the children carefully listened to Zoe as she demonstrated the process of needle-felting, so that the children could make some final details to add to the mural to give it some more dimension and a perfect final touch.
The class made such an amazing colourful piece, perfectly resembling the books illustrations !
We had such an amazing day at Kirkheaton Primary School again, and look forward to more days of arts and crafts there in the future 😊
