This Spring we are proud to exhibit Heads and Tales, by the very accomplished Mick Kirkby-Geddes.
A private viewing will be held on the 13th May for family, close friends, and Friends of Globe, and open to the public from the 14th onwards, viewing during regular studio hours - Monday to Thursday, and Saturdays 10am to 3pm.
Metal sculptor Mick Kirkby-Geddes is currently based at Sculpture Lounge, home to 17 different artists studios in Holmbridge.
Mick’s big revelation occurred at art college in Leeds when his materials budget ran out and he had to be more resourceful and use scrap metals. Now, 28 years later, as a professional sculptor he still primarily uses junk metal, welding it together with new metal and a touch of humour to give it a new life. The unique shapes are often the starting point and will often dictate what his pieces will become; garden shears become a birds beak, a helmet becomes a tortoise shell or the belly of an animal.
Often influenced by cartoons, 1970s kids TV and books, Mick makes sculptures to go inside and outside, public art, for commission and sometimes work in schools too.
‘It’s rewarding working with children, explaining what I do as an artist, showing them my work and then helping them to create something of their own. I’ve used materials such as junk cardboard, wire, plaster-bandage, cement fondue, fruit and vegetables and even welded metal when working with children in over two hundred schools.’
