Balancing Form

We are delighted to present Balancing Form by Emma Oughtibridge, which will be showing at Zapato Taproom from Friday 12th April. Please join us for the exhibition preview from 7pm onwards.

‘After completing a Fine Art degree, I graduated from Brighton University with a PGCE in 2000.  I moved from London to Holmfirth to set up a professional studio, becoming a part-time tutor of adults and young people. This creative freedom allowed me to focus on developing my own creative style. I now teach A level Art at Rochdale Sixth Form College, alongside working as a contemporary abstract painter.’

‘A grey slice of stillness, scratched into the surface, converses with an adjacent cadmium block. A wedge of black stands against an irregular rectangle of lemon yellow. Red speaks loudly, layer upon layer, muted by grey greens.  Imperfect coral tones drag leaving staccato marks on canvas.  A thin line boldly intersects a dominant form leaving a tenuously balanced single transparent semi-circle. These constructions depict the interplay of rhythm with composition.’

Balancing Form is running until 18th May. Please check Zapato website for the most up to date opening hours.

'Ova roof tops

'Ova roof tops is a new exhibition by the brilliant Lisa Stubbs, exploring the idea of ‘home’ and feelings of nostalgia in relation to a place where we hold domestic affections and a sense of belonging.

‘I’m interested in environmental triggers for nostalgia and the sentimentality of a rosy retrospective. My aim is to translate these feelings into a visual narrative, opening up conversations linked to our past landscapes and the bricks and mortar where we hold our emotive roots.’

Lisa is a printmaker and creative facilitator in the Yorkshire Holme Valley and works from her studio here in Slaithwaite.

‘I have many influences which feed into and inform my work. I’m inspired by the journey to my studio through the scenic steep valleys which gives me a birds eye perspective of the landscape and a sense of its history and the homes embedded within it. My background is in narrative illustration and I’m fascinated how illustrators visualise emotions especially in children’s picture books, this has led me to working with children who struggle to articulate their feelings. By using creative techniques I help children process their world and create a visual narrative while finding comfort in the process. I observe the children channeling complex feelings of home life through choice of colour, medium, pressure applied to the paper and thoughtful pauses throughout. I’m inspired by the children’s intuitively confident creative freedom and instinctive nonjudgemental trust in the outcome. I work to foster this approach towards my own work by being process focussed and maintaining a curious and open mindset.

I start building my prints with a collection of hand painted papers and vintage ephemera, including letters, postcards, maps and photographs representing lost moments, memories of place and pockets of time. I look for a connection to build a narrative and create quick thumbnail sketches. I transfer the spontaneous energy of the naive lines from these sketches onto TetraPak cartons which I use as print plates to support sustainability within my printmaking. I incise into the TetraPak’s surface with etching needles, a scalpel, leather work tools, screw drivers and a pattern cutting wheel, then create texture with scrim, an open gauzed cloth used to remove ink from the plate. This is done during the inking process, complimenting the mark making and adding movement and authenticity to the final print. I combine a number of printmaking techniques including blind emboss, de-bossing, monoprint, drypoint, wax pastel transfer and Chine collé allowing for flexibility when laying out the final print on the press bed.

Cross pollinating these processes and jigsawing techniques together also allows for affordable experimentation and an organic playful approach which compliments the visual narrative and gives new perspective into these forgotten memories in the landscape of everyday lives.’

'Ova roof tops will be running from 4th May to 22nd June at our Globe Arts Studio Gallery on Carr Lane.

Join us on Saturday 4th May for our Print Day in May to celebrate Lisa’s exciting exhibition and this fun event, everyone is welcome!

Super Seconds Sunday

Super Seconds Sunday

Support Local at Super Seconds Sunday

Join us for our 2nd Super Seconds Sunday, a brand new concept which we are running in order to help support our building, artist studio holders and local makers.

Come along between 11am-2pm (well behaved dogs are allowed too!) and buy from local artists and makers.

For anyone that doesn’t already know, we currently support 11 micro businesses within our studios and are very proud of the broad range of creatives who operate from them. With the costs of running a business increasing, we are now looking at different ways of supporting our studio holders by holding a community event, open to everyone.

On the second Sunday of every 3rd month, our doors will be open to the public in which you can come and purchase creatives’ “seconds” and artist materials. Held in our Create Space on New Street side of our building, double grey doors next to Destination.

A ‘creative second’ might look like an accidental fingerprint on a print, an upturned corner on a photograph, a re-fused glass keyring, or a ceramic bowl with the wrong coloured glaze on it. Basically any slight imperfection on a handmade which usually means it can’t be sold as easily, by the artist.

The event will help to save these pieces from being forgotten about in a cupboard or studio, getting them out into the world - living out the rest of their days in your homes!

This market is for creatives only, who are selling seconds or materials they may use in their own work.

STALLHOLDERS – there are a limited amount of stalls, available for £10. If you want to join us- book your stall and find out more information via our Art Shop or the BOOK EVENT button at the bottom of this page.

Trifle Range

Originally from Swansea but now based in Slaithwaite, Christian trained as an illustrator, worked as a graphic designer and has been involved in all manner of art, design and community projects, including Bristow & Lloyd ‘a pair of so-called artists’.

'Trifle range is a selection of recent abstract paintings that celebrate painting in all its messy, provisional, visually edible, disruptive, unfussy, and playful ways. I enjoy painting and wish to transmit some of that optimism through the work.'

This is a FREE exhibition and all works are available to purchase via our online Art Shop, https://www.globearts.org.uk/art-shop-new

Here, There, Nowhere

This Autumn we present Here, There, Nowhere by the talented Annie Roche.

Meet the Artist on Saturday 23rd September at 2pm for Friends of Globe and the general public.

Running Saturday 23rd September – Saturday 21st October 2023 during our regular opening hours.

After 38 years of teaching Art, firstly at Honley High, then 32 at Greenhead College, I now have time to explore my own creativity, setting up a studio and enjoying my artistic journey. Still-life, Landscape, Abstract all cross over, compositions are not literal. Shapes are sometimes recognisable but also obtuse, to be re interpreted, my interest is often drawn to the spaces, lines and scribbles in between them. I play with a sense of near and far, stillness and movement, building up surfaces, textures and combining layers, serendipity, just seeing what happens. Geometric shapes create a sense of continuity, whilst fluid organic shapes connect me emotionally. Inspired by the seasons, panoramic landscapes but also small moments, such as a hopping bee. Colour is central, to my work, it is what makes my heart sing, brings me joy , a sense of optimism and hopefulness.

Viewing during our regular studio opening times: MON – THUR 10AM – 3PM, and SATURDAY – 10AM – 2PM.

FREE for everyone

Sunny Spells and Occasional Rain by Pippa Ashworth explores the Yorkshire landscape through colour and textures using watercolour, acrylic paint and mixed media to create marks both accidental and deliberate.

As part of Pippa’s creative process she visually records the landscape whilst on walks in nature. Sketchbooks underpin all aspects of the journey, and provide the starting point for things to come.

We are delighted to present ‘Sunny Spells and Occasional Rain’ this Spring in our studio space. Pippa is a local artist who tutors here at Globe throughout the year, her painting and mixed media course and one off workshops sell out instantly!

“Born in Middlesex , I have spent most of my adult life in the North of England. I worked as a lecturer in Printmaking and on Foundation studies in a local Art College for 23 years and am now a full time painter.

An essential part of my work explores combinations of colour and textures using watercolour, acrylic paint and mixed media in order to create marks both accidental and deliberate. Walking, exploring and visually recording the landscape is very much a part of my creative process. I make sketches and take photographs while I am out and then use these to develop and complete work back in the studio.

I hope people looking at my paintings engage on an emotional and aesthetic level and become participants in the experience of being outside in the countryside throughout the seasons.

My work has sold throughout Yorkshire and more recently through Craft in Focus events including RHS Wisley, RHS Hyde Hall, Hever Castle and The Guildhall Winchester. Other exhibitions include Dean Clough Halifax, Huddersfield Art Gallery, ’Just Makers’ Ripley Castle, Helmsley Art Centre, BoothHouse Gallery, Holme Castle, Mytholmbridge Art Studio and UpCountry for Holmfirth Art Week .

I have also been Artist in residence at Laurance Batley Theatre in Huddersfield and given workshops and demonstrations in painting, printmaking and photography to Art Societies and Community Art groups.”

Textiles, Drawing & Making

This Spring we present Textiles, Drawing & Making by the talented Nicola Perren.

Nicola is a freelance designer, maker, artist and teacher with a studio-based practice here at Globe Art Studios in Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire.

Drawing is at the heart of Nicola Perren’s practice, often developing into and through textiles. Form, decoration, abstraction, colour, space and material are pushed and pulled through an experimental process to create unforeseen outcomes. Design, model making, art, sculpture, construction, fashion, quilt making, and craft inspire this creative practice which draws equally from the professional through to the amateur.

Textiles, Drawing & Making presents various works that nod to thoughts in progress, ideas that go nowhere and sparks of new directions.

Running Saturday 15th April – Saturday 20th May 2023 during our regular opening hours.

MEET THE ARTIST on our Print Day in May event where Nicola will be here with her work and a small demo! STD - 6/5/23
