Friends of Globe Arts

This September we are launching our new Friends of Globe Arts, an exclusive offering that gives you access to a host of benefits for a small annual fee.

Here at Globe Arts we run our art school independently with practically no external funding this means every class and workshop fee supports the delivery of the classes and events, as well as the upkeep of our building.  Our aim is to create a vibrant, varied and welcoming creative environment, which means offering a wide range of arts and craft activities for all ages, as well as exhibitions and events showcasing the best of local arts and crafts. 

You can help us continue to grow and develop what we do by becoming a Friend of Globe Arts.  For a one off £30 fee you will receive one year's Friends benefits (Sept-August) including access to Exhibition Previews, Art Demonstrations & Talks, free personal practise/studio time, Friends only creative workshops and regular newsletters.

Drawing & Painting with Jackie Harrowsmith – Monday

Weekly art class during term time. Develop a range of skills using wet and dry media, progress from beginner to intermediate. We theme the course such as still life, portraiture, landscape, or you are welcome to work on your own project if you prefer - contact us to find out what we are currently working towards.

All tuition, materials and light refreshments included.

Date/Time: Mondays 10am to 12pm from 9th Sept for 6 weeks (continues throughout the year)

Cost: £15 per session


Fused Glass with Jackie Harrowsmith – Monday

Learn the basic and advanced techniques of fused glass making, or develop your skills further in our term time evening class - perfect to experiment and create your own small project pieces.  You will learn a variety of fusing methods and materials including frits, confetti, stringer and inclusions.

Suitable for beginners and those with more fused glass experience, and includes all tuition, equipment, materials (significant glass stock included with the option to purchase additional glass if needed for large projects). 

Dates/Time:  Beginner/Intermediate Mondays 1.30pm to 3pm & Wed 6.30pm to 8pm; Advanced Mondays 6.30pm to 8pm runs for 6 weeks from 9th Sept (classes continue throughout the year)

Painting with Claire Murray

Following the success of Claire's Drawing for All class, we are adding her brand new painting class from September 2019.

Perfect for beginners and improvers alike, Claire will teach a range of mark making and painting skills using a range of paint mediums.  Claire is a great tutor and creates a relaxed atmosphere, where you feel confident to try out new techniques and explore the creative activities.

Print making – Tuesday Day Class

We are delighted to add this new regular class this November.  Run by Globe Arts founder Jackie Harrowsmith, you will have the opportunity to delve into the world of print making.  Experiencing a wide range of techniques such as mono, lino, screen, etching and collagraph.

Date/Time:  1pm to 3pm Tuesdays from 5th November (in 6 week blocks)

Life Drawing with Jackie Harrowsmith


Develop a wide range of fundamental techniques using wet and dry media.  Friendly atmosphere,  experienced tutor, and a variety of models, all abilities welcome from beginners to those wishing to develop their practise.  All tuition, materials and equipment are provided. 

Date/Time: Tuesdays at 6.30pm to 8.30pm from September 10th for 6 weeks (class runs throughout the year)

Cost: £20 per session



Drawing for All with Claire Murray – Wednesday

Claire Murray is an experienced art tutor and talented artists.  She returns with her popular Drawing for All class on Wednesday mornings.  Her class incorporates traditional drawing skills with experimentation.  This is the perfect course for those wanting to get back to basics build confidence and try out new techniques with guidance provided throughout.  Maybe you haven't drawn since school and want to rediscover your creativity through drawing.  Maybe you are self taught and want to have some tuition.  Maybe you just enjoy being around like minded people.

All tuition, materials and light refreshments included.

Time/Dates:  10am to 12pm Wednesdays from 11th September for 6 weeks (continues through the year)

Stained Glass with Diane Mellor – Wednesday

This Autumn we welcome back our tutor Diane Mellor for 2 special workshops.  Diane is an experienced stained glass artist and she will lead you through the basics of glass cutting, soldering and leading glass.  You'll have the opportunity to design and create your own 2D (maybe 3D!) project. 

Our 2 day workshop in October really gives the chance to get to grips with each part of the process, and the small group size ensures there is plenty of individual guidance and advice.

And our 1 day Christmas special will give you basic cutting, coppering and soldering skills to create at least 1 2D Christmas decoration

Craftanoon with Zoe Gale – Thursday

Craftanoon is our relaxed afternoon of crafting - it's a time to try out craft skills and create your own handmade uniques pieces.  Each term, we cover a range of drawing and crafting skills such as weaving, paper cutting; felting; collage; textiles to build skills and create a project piece incorporating those skills.

This is a weekly class that you can dip in and out of to suit your availability,

Time/Date:  1pm to 3pm Thursdays returns 12th September for 6 weeks (runs throughout the year)

Cost:  £15 per week 


ArTalk and Class Thursday Evening

Dr Tom Ratcliffe returns this winter with an engaging Art History talk, delving into the world of the Landscape Artist.

Fantastic opportunity for the art lover to immerse themselves in the history of art and try out the techniques in style of the artists.  Tom has extensive knowledge of art history, as well as being an accomplished artist in his own right, he talks freely and in depth offering huge insight across a many eras and art movements.

Times/Dates:  Thursday 14th November 7pm to 8.30pm

Costs:  £5  (free to Friends of Globe Arts)


Jewellery Making with Frances Noon

Frances Noon returns with Autumn with her popular course, An introduction to Jewellery Making.  The perfect beginner course allowing you to develop different techniques over 6 weeks.  You'll be initially using copper and then move onto silver when you feel more confident. You will form pieces from sheet metal and wire and learn how to shape them into earrings, pendants or brooches.

You will learn how to solder using a gas torch, how to cut out shapes using a piercing saw, how to add texture & details to a metal surface through hammering & use of punches.
You will learn how to make your own findings, which are the ear wires & little jump rings that link pieces together.

If you have attended Frances' first course, or have some experience of silversmithing, this is a small group and you will be able to extend your skills.

Time/Dates:  6.30pm to 8.30pm from 7th Nov for 6 weeks (then ongoing through the year)

Life Drawing – pregnancy

Join us for this very special life drawing workshop:  a unique opportunity to draw our model in the later stages of her pregnancy.

This is a fully tutored workshop, and we provide all the materials as well as light refreshments.

Walk and Draw with Maggie O’Keeffe

Maggie O'Keeffe returns with her popular  monthly drawing workshops. 

In the first of her workshops this Autumn, you'll explore Slaithwaite village and canal on a guided walk and draw.  You'll take time to sketch and record the village atmosphere, architecture and natural environment, before returning to the studio to reflect and work up your sketches.  Maggie's art is mindful, and she will guide you in exploring some simple drawing practices designed to help you let go of the inner critic.

Metal Stamping with Kim Searle


We are delighted to have Kim return this Autumn with a fantastic day of Metal Stamping.  We've increased the length of the workshop, so there is time to make more!  Plus added a morning workshop just for kids (under 14s) and the afternoon and evening for the grown ups.

In this session you will learn to make your own personalised hand stamped jewellery.   This will include bracelets, pendants and keyrings. After a chance to practice with different stamps, fonts and hammers you will make a selection of jewellery to take home with you. There will be course notes for you to take home, with full instructions on what tools you've used and where you can get tools and materials.

Aromatherapy Candles with Kim Searle


Kim Searle of Darn it Workshops returns with her popular aromatherapy poured candle making workshop. 

Create your own poured candles using all natural soy wax, essential oils and scents, decoration, jam jars, vintage tea cups and more. You'll learn how to blend essential oils to create a harmonious blend that's tailored to you. All materials used in this workshop are vegan friendly. All materials included, and you'll have an opportunity to make several candles scented candles - you are welcome to bring your own small vessels like vintage teacups etc.

Please note, the candles need to settle and set for 24 hours so can't be taken on the day - collection at least 24 hours after the workshop

Silver Ring Workshop with Mia Calderisi


Mia Calderisi of Designs by Mia is an amazing contemporary jeweller and experienced tutor from Stockport, who has run a series of workshops for us over the last 2 years.  She returns this Autumn with her popular ring making workshop.  

During the day, you will learn the basics of silversmithing, how to measure and manipulate your silver to create your unique silver ring.  This is a great one day experience, that will provide a good foundation of skills in jewellery making perfect for the absolute beginner, or improver who would like to continue to practise their skills.

Wednesday Workshop – Lino-cut Cards

Join us for one of our popular seasonal workshops - a perfect way to try out a craft and at the same time make your own handmade items.
This Wednesday is a fabulous print making workshop - 2 hours to explore lino-cut print making - and create a set of cards and maybe a tag or two!

English Paperpiece Tote Bags

We are delighted to have local maker Helena Tarn led this workshop learning the traditional craft of English paperpiece patchwork.  But don't worry you wont be expected to complete a whole quilt top at this workshop!  Instead you will use the patchwork to embellish your own tote bag.

A great introduction into this traditional hand stitching skill.

Make a Cake Plate Workshop

Inspired by the fused glass classes and workshops we run? Love to entertain and would like create your own bespoke cake plate? Our 1/2 day workshop this Autumn is the perfect day for you....

Perfect for those new to fused glass as we'll over the basics, or those with more experience. You'll learn the basics, design and make your plate - we'll need to fuse it so it can't be taken on the day.

All tuition, materials and light refreshments.  NB - image is full cake stand, you'll be making a plate the size of the bottom layer (approx. 30cm diameter)

Stained Glass Christmas Decorations



Christmas Wreaths

Join us this December to create your own fresh Christmas wreath.  You'll make your own willow frame to embellish with a selection of seasonal greenery. Suitable for all ages, we have 2 diary dates - Wednesday 18th December for adults, and Saturday 21st for Friends of Globe Arts and a family workshop too.

We are making our wreaths close to Christmas so they will last the season.

We know that not everyone wants to book a regular class or be fixed to attending a structured workshop BUT still want to get creative.  Our drop in workshops are the perfect way to enjoy our Studio, try out an art or craft activity and fit it around your day - simply turn up when it suits and stay as long as you like. 
The drop in days are open to all ages (kids and adults), children under 14 need to be accompanied - why not create together.  We supply all materials plus basic instruction/guidance (please note unlike our regular classes and bookable workshop these sessions are not tutored).
Cost:  £5 per person - no need to book, simply turn up to create


Christmas Family Fused Glass

Our wonderfully festive family workshop returns this year on Saturday 7th & 14th December - it books up fast!

A great workshop to try out fused glass and make your own family set of fused glass decorations.  Suitable for all ages (everyone must wear safety goggles) from around 5 years plus as we are working with glass and the making requires a level of concentration and dexterity.

Please note, we need to fire and string the decorations and we will let you know when they are ready of collection.

Date/Time:  Saturday 7th & 14th December 2pm to 3.30pm

Home Education Art programme

Especially for local families who home educate their children we have begun a programme of art and craft sessions.  Classes restart Monday 4th November

Art activities will be fully tutored and appropriate from age 6, building art skills and techniques, tapping into each child's creativity.  To offer flexibility around arrival and settling children in, we will open with  independent exploration with the tuition beginning 30mins into the session.  

Dates/Time:  Monday 4th November for 6 weeks 1.30pm to 3pm

Saturday Art Club – kids only!

Weekly, term-time art clubs for children 7 to 14 years.

We run term time, developing technical art and craft skills, each half term is theme - we've just had a great half term focusing on Japanese art and crafts.  We ensure the children create alongside merging artists who inspire and enthuse.  Our staff include experienced teachers, with DBS and first aid.

Afterschool Art Club:  Mondays 4pm to 5pm (£5 per session

Junior - 7 to 10 years: Saturdays 9.30am to 11am  (£8 per session)

Young Creatives - 11 years plus:  Saturdays 11am to 1pm (£9 per session)

Dates:  Class returns Monday 9th Sept & Saturday 14th Sept for 6 weeks (classes run throughout the year)

We deliver visual art workshops from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5, tailored to your curriculum needs, aimed at increasing confidence, skills and expertise. We offer flexible programmes from full day, ½ day, after-school, inset and holiday provision to teacher CDP. Each workshop is fully planned, delivered and evaluated to achieve maximum impact. We are accredited to deliver Arts Award Explorer to Silver and can contribute additional hours to your existing Arts Award provision, or develop a full programme. Whether you are a new or seasoned teacher, continuing your professional development is important for you, your school and your pupils. Our courses give you the time and space to focus on your personal practice; to learn new and enhance existing skills and to develop new was of delivering topics using a variety of accessible equipment and medium, as well as providing opportunities for collaboration and networking. We have courses available for Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5 staff and these are delivered by experienced, qualified teachers.

Twilight CPD - from £25 per person

After school, twilight sessions at our own Studio or in your school setting. These sessions can be tailored to suit your specific needs or be a more general introduction to a particular medium such as silk painting.

Full Day Courses - from £90 per person

Our one day courses focus on the develop skills using key medium such as printing, fused glass and life drawing, as well as traditional drawing and painting skills. Each course includes full tuition, materials and lunch.

Art Education Conference - June - £50 per person (25% early bird discount)

Our first (annual) conference is an excellent opportunity to meet local artists and art suppliers; discuss current hot topics in Art education and take part in practical workshops.

About Us

We set up Globe Arts Education in May 2014 with the aim of building confidence and inspiring creativity within young people, their families and the wider community, through the delivery of high quality visual art courses and events.

We have over 25 years of secondary teaching and subject leadership experience in the fields of Visual Art and Business and Enterprise. We want to use our professional experience to narrow the gaps in confidence, expertise and facilities within visual arts.
