We are very proud to present a one-woman show by local artist Sylvi Gibbs in the Globe Gallery. Her imaginative work captures her response to changes in the Colne Valley. The exhibition opens on Saturday 13th January at 10am and you have the opportunity to meet Sylvi and chat to her about her work from 11am to 4pm - again on 3rd February.
The artist lived next door to a working mill in Slaithwaite for over 30 years. Owned by Schofield and Smith’s Ltd, the mill was internationally famous for the production of top-quality worsted cloth.
When it closed, Sylvi retrieved discarded cloth and small bits of wood and metal from the abandoned site. These she used to tell her story of “the mill next door”, the moorlands and hills that surrounded it, and the beautiful cloth itself.
She admits to being “A bit obsessed by it”.
We hope you enjoy it.

“Mindfulness means the awareness that arises from paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” Jon Kabat-Zinn 1990
Surely drawing is a perfect way to stay present in the moment...or is it? Not if the inner critic has anything to do with it. It tells us “I can’t draw”. It judges our drawing to be “not good enough”. It tells us not to bother.
But the inner critic is just another form of thinking, and as Ruby Wax tells us “Thoughts aren’t fact, so don’t take them seriously”.
Join Maggie O’Keeffe to explore some simple drawing practices designed to help us let go of the inner critic. You don’t need to know anything about mindfulness or anything about drawing.
