Friends of Globe Arts

Become a Friend of Globe Arts, an exclusive offering that gives you access to a host of benefits for a small annual fee.

Here at Globe Arts we run our art school independently with practically no external funding this means every class and workshop fee supports the delivery of the classes and events, as well as the upkeep of our building.  Our aim is to create a vibrant, varied and welcoming creative environment, which means offering a wide range of arts and craft activities for all ages, as well as exhibitions and events showcasing the best of local arts and crafts. 

You can help us continue to grow and develop what we do by becoming a Friend of Globe Arts.  For a one off £30 fee you will receive one year's Friends benefits (Sept-August) including access to Exhibition Previews, Art Demonstrations & Talks, free personal practise/studio time, Friends only creative workshops and regular newsletters.

Drawing & Painting

Weekly art class during term time. Develop a range of skills using wet and dry media, progress from beginner to intermediate. We theme the course such as still life, portraiture, landscape, or you are welcome to work on your own project if you prefer - contact us to find out what we are currently working towards.

Fused Glass

Learn the basic and advanced techniques of fused glass making, or develop your skills further in our term time evening class - perfect to experiment and create your own small project pieces.  You will learn a variety of fusing methods and materials including frits, confetti, stringer and inclusions.

Suitable for beginners through to advanced practitioners with a choice of class days and times, and includes all tuition, equipment, materials (significant glass stock included with the option to purchase additional glass if needed for large projects). 

Join Friends of Globe Arts for weekly personal practice on Thursday evenings (term dates) once you have learnt the basics.

Dates/Time:  Beginner/Intermediate Mondays 1.30pm to 3pm & Wed 6.30pm to 8pm; Advanced Mondays 6.30pm to 8pm runs for 6 weeks from 6th January  (classes continue throughout the year)

Cost:  £20 per session


Introduction to Watercolour Painting

This is our first Watercolour evening class led by experienced artist Mark Bergum, who will provide step by step guidance and tuition.  On the course you will discover how to apply basic brush techniques in watercolours, how to create simple, effective washes, how to plan and develop composition techniques for a landscape painting and how to practice successful colour mixing techniques.

This course is suitable for both complete beginners and more experienced practitioners. A range of subjects and themes will be covered on the course from still life to landscape and seascape and could include semi abstract techniques in painting.

Book the full course or dip into weekly session, please note that the course is progressive rather than stand alone classes.

Painting Class

Claire Murray is an accomplished painter and experienced tutor, and her new (ish) Painting Class is proving very popular.

Perfect for beginners and improvers alike, Claire will teach a range of mark making and painting skills using a range of paint mediums.  Claire is a great tutor and creates a relaxed atmosphere, where you feel confident to try out new techniques and explore the creative activities.

Print making


Print making is a diverse and exciting medium with many techniques to explore and experiment with.  Our print course is run by Globe Arts founder Jackie Harrowsmith, who has a wealth of experience and ideas for you to learn and develop.  Each half term will be focused on a different technique to give you the opportunity to really get under the skin of each technique.  

Date/Time:  Wednesday 1.30pm to 3.30pm from 26th February (in 6 week blocks)

Life Drawing

Our Life Drawing class is a weekly class that runs September to July in termly blocks.  It is a fully tutored class and includes all your materials for the evening and light refreshments. 
The class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced drawers.  The class will incorporate a wide range of drawing techniques and mediums and takes inspiration from many of the great artists.  We book a range of models through the year, so whether you choose to dip in for the occasional class or make it part of your creative week, we ensure that there will always be variety, breath and challenge in each class.
Easels are available to book weekly or in term blocks, at £20 per session.

Learn to Draw

This year Claire Murray brings us a new drawing course.  Perfect for the absolute beginner and those who want to brush up on their drawings skills, get back to basics and try out new techniques with guidance provided throughout.  This course will explore a range of drawing techniques and are the perfect foundations for moving onto our Drawing & Painting, Painting and Life Drawing classes.

Maybe you haven't drawn since school and want to rediscover your creativity through drawing.  Maybe you are self taught and want to have some tuition.  Maybe you just enjoy being around like minded people.

All tuition, materials and light refreshments included.

Time/Dates:  10am to 12pm Wednesdays from 8th January (6 week blocks)

Wednesday Workshop – Coral Creations

Join us on Wednesday 22nd April for this fun fused glass workshop.  Work with strips and shards to make unique coral style pieces.  Have a go at a bowl, tealight or even a coaster.  There will be options to decorate with colour too!

Please note that work cannot be taken on the night as it needs to be fired (possibly a couple of times).

This one off taster workshop and includes all tuition, materials, fusing and light refreshments.

Kokedama (plant ball) Workshop

Kokedama is a beautiful form of Japanese Bonsai that uses moss to form the growing container for living plants. A truly unusual and unique form of growing. 

Join Byron for beautiful workshop, he will guide you through the techniques to create your moss growing from and you'll have a wide selection of plants to choose from to create your own living sculptural piece.

Wednesday Workshop – Batik Cushion

Our Wednesday Workshops are the perfect mid-week wind down.  Join us for an evening batik - a great introduction to a new skill!  In this workshop we'll show you how to apply the hot wax and inks to create a unique design.  At the end of the session you will have your own cushion (we include the pad too!) to liven up your home décor.

All materials, equipment and refreshments are included at the session.  Come along with a friend or on your own for an creative, calming evening.

Wednesday Workshop – Jesmonite Pots

Create your own miniature plant pots with artist and maker Kim Searle using a variety of geometric and recycled moulds.

Jesmonite was named material of the year 2017, have a go and see why! It's a versatile material that will create a different pot every time - you'll learn how to weigh it, mix it, add colours and textural effects to create a pot unique to you. Pots can be made with pale pastels or vibrant colours, block colours or fantastic marbled effects.

You will get to try a type of Jesmonite that will set by the end of the session as well as another type that will set the next day and has a much more organic look. There will be a variety of plant cuttings that you can add to your new set pots!

Wednesday Workshop – Resin Jewellery

Join us on Wednesday 13th May and play with inks and pigments to create stunning resin jewellery pieces.  You'll have the opportunity to make between 5-10 individual pieces including pendants, rings, keyrings and bangles.

The resin takes time to set, so return the following Wednesday to finish your pieces and add findings - we include 1 chain, 1 keyring and jump rings for all pieces.

Craftanoon is our relaxed afternoon of crafting - it's a time to try out craft skills and create your own handmade uniques pieces.  Each term, we cover a range of drawing and crafting skills such as weaving, paper cutting; felting; collage; textiles to build skills and create a project piece incorporating those skills.

This is a weekly class that you can dip in and out of to suit your availability,

Time/Date:  1pm to 3pm Thursdays returns 8th January for 6 weeks (runs throughout the year)

ArTalk with Dr Tom Ratcliffe

Dr Tom Ratcliffe returns this year with two engaging Art History talks, delving into the world of great artistic movements.

Fantastic opportunity for the art lover to immerse themselves in the history of art with Tom's informative talks with plenty of opportunity for discussion with like minded folk over a coffee and biscuits.  Tom has extensive knowledge of art history, as well as being an accomplished artist in his own right, he talks freely and in depth offering huge insight across a many eras and art movements.

Times/Dates:  Thursday 5th March and 4th June 7pm to 8.30pm

Jewellery Making with Frances Noon

Frances Noon returns this winter with her popular course, An introduction to Jewellery Making.  The perfect beginner course allowing you to develop different techniques over 6 weeks.  You'll be initially using copper and then move onto silver when you feel more confident. You will form pieces from sheet metal and wire and learn how to shape them into earrings, pendants or brooches.

You will learn how to solder using a gas torch, how to cut out shapes using a piercing saw, how to add texture & details to a metal surface through hammering & use of punches.
You will learn how to make your own findings, which are the ear wires & little jump rings that link pieces together.

If you have attended Frances' first course, or have some experience of silversmithing, this is a small group and you will be able to extend your skills.

Silk Painting & Afternoon Tea

This Spring, join us for a full day of silk painting - a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in this traditional technique and create your own wearable silk scarf. 
You'll use inks and dyes using a variety watercolour techniques, keeping the colours brilliant, vibrant and translucent which merge on the silk fabric  - perfect for your silk scarf!
The workshop is the day before Mother's Day - a perfect opportunity for some Mother/Daughter time; or create a beautiful gift for the favourite lady in your life; or simply to give yourself time to relax and be creative.
We'll be including a delicious afternoon tea too!

Abstract Landscape with Claire Murray

Claire Murray Artist is a talented abstract artist AND our very own tutor for drawing and painting here at Globe Arts. Join her for a full day workshop where she will share her experience and expert tuition in acrylic painting.  You will create your own abstract landscape inspired by Claire's work.

Workshop includes tuition, materials and buffet lunch.

Chinese Brush Stroke with Anne Allen

Anne Allen returns offering an alternative technique of Chinese Brush Painting - Free Style. 

This workshop is for all who have an interest in Chinese Brush Painting, both beginners and those with some experience.  After quickly explaining the traditional materials, Anne will demonstrate how to load a brush with several colours in order to paint poppies with bees in freestyle on unsized xuan paper.  You will then produce your own composition.

After lunch, you will paint irises with butterflies in freestyle.  Anne will show you how to add a seal (chop) to complete the painting. Anne will give personal one-to-one assistance throughout the day.

You will work on unsized xuan paper with Chinese painting colours and ink, using Chinese brushes. 

About the Artist

Anne has been demonstrating and teaching Chinese Brush Painting for some 20 years and enjoys bringing this art form to others.   She is Secretary and Joint Chairman of the Yorkshire Group of the national Chinese Brush Painters Society, Yorkshire group and organises monthly workshops at Pool in Wharfedale.

Terranium Workshop with Byron Jones

Join our fabulous tutor, Byron for a day making your own contemporary plant filled terrarium – a self-sufficient environment within a glass vessel. 

During the day, you'll learn about the different plants and you'll be guided through the process to create a stunning and unique eco-system.

Walk and Draw with Maggie O’Keeffe

Maggie O'Keefe returns with her popular mindful drawing workshops.

You'll explore Slaithwaite village and canal on a guided walk and draw.  You'll take time to sketch and record the village atmosphere, architecture and natural environment, before returning to the studio to reflect and work up your sketches.  Maggie's art is mindful, and she will guide you in exploring some simple drawing practices designed to help us let go of the inner critic.

Saturday Art Club – kids only!

Weekly, term-time art clubs for children 7 to 14 years.

We run term time, developing technical art and craft skills, each half term is theme - we've just had a great half term focusing on Japanese art and crafts.  We ensure the children create alongside merging artists who inspire and enthuse.  Our staff include experienced teachers, with DBS and first aid.

Junior - 7 to 10 years: Saturdays 9.30am to 11am  (£8 per session)

Young Creatives - 11 years plus:  Saturdays 11am to 1pm (£9 per session)

Holiday Drop In Crafts



Join us this holiday for our Easter Drop In - no need to book, turn up to suit you (we close at 3pm).  There will be different crafts on each day, simply pop in and make.  Suitable for all ages (please note, this isn't a kids art club and under 14s need accompanying): families, friends or come on your own - everyone is welcome.

Whether you are a new or seasoned teacher, continuing your professional development is important for you, your school and your pupils. Our courses give you the time and space to focus on your personal practice; to learn new and enhance existing skills and to develop new was of delivering topics using a variety of accessible equipment and medium, as well as providing opportunities for collaboration and networking. We have courses available for Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5 staff and these are delivered by experienced, qualified teachers.

Twilight CPD - from £25 per person

After school, twilight sessions at our own Studio or in your school setting. These sessions can be tailored to suit your specific needs or be a more general introduction to a particular medium such as silk painting.

Full Day Courses - from £90 per person

Our one day courses focus on the develop skills using key medium such as printing, fused glass and life drawing, as well as traditional drawing and painting skills. Each course includes full tuition, materials and lunch.

We set up Globe Arts Education in May 2014 with the aim of building confidence and inspiring creativity within young people, their families and the wider community, through the delivery of high quality visual art courses and events.

We have over 25 years of secondary teaching and subject leadership experience in the fields of Visual Art and Business and Enterprise. We want to use our professional experience to narrow the gaps in confidence, expertise and facilities within visual arts.
